The 19th edition of the U-17 World Cup will take place from November 10, 2023 to December 2, 2023 with Indonesia having the honor of hosting. 24 countries from 6 confederations will battle for the coveted title, with four-time champions Brazil as the defending champions. Originally, the U-17 World Cup tournament was to be held in Peru to host the U-17 World Cup in 2021. After the 2021 edition was canceled due to the pandemic, Peru was given the right back to host the 2023 edition. However, along with infrastructure problems, Peru finally decided to withdraw as host on April 3, 2023. Then on June 23, 2023, FIFA officially announced Indonesia as the new host for the 2023 U-17 World Cup. On this occasion, the first time Indonesia held a FIFA tournament was also the first time the U-17 World Cup was held in Southeast Asia.
The 2023 U-17 World Cup drawing was held at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, on September 15, 2023. A total of 24 teams were divided into six groups, of which Indonesia was part of Group A along with Ecuador, Panama and Morocco. The two teams that end up in the top two of each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, will qualify for the knockout phase. The knockout phase includes the round of 16, the quarter-finals, the semifinals, the third-place match, and the final. In the knockout phase there is no extra time, if the match remains tied until after 2×45 minutes of normal time, it will immediately be held on penalties to determine the winner.
A total of four cities in Indonesia have been designated as host cities for the 2023 U-17 World Cup. The four cities are Surabaya, Surakarta, Jakarta and Bandung, all of which are located on the island of Java. There are four stadiums that will be used, namely Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (Surabaya), Manahan Stadium (Surakarta), Jakarta International Stadium (Jakarta), and Si Jalak Harupat Stadium (Bandung). All Indonesia U-17 national team matches in Group A will be held at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium, Surabaya.
