These days we are used to high resolution device screens on small devices. Even the mobile phone in our hands has the same number of pixels and even more than a flat screen television. Then the micro led can far exceed this in the resolution of screen technology. Therefore, to support faster development, even the Apple brand has invested heavily in the development of Micro LED. But why the Micro LED? Isn’t the IPS LCD and OLED screens that are used now very good?

Apparently, MicroLED has similarities to Organic LED or OLED which is very popular in high-end phones such as the Samsung Galaxy and iPhone. The difference between an LCD screen and an OLED is that the pixels on the OLED can emit their own light, so there is no need for a backlit like an LCD screen, which will add thickness and sometimes make the colors don’t match. Colors on OLED screens are more accurate and also don’t have darker blacks because the black areas on the screen are completely off while on LCDs there is backlit that keeps the screen on. OLED screens also have less power consumption, which is a big advantage to use on smartphones so that we can use them all day.

MicroLED does not use organic materials, but rather a non-organic material in the form of Gallium Nitride, which can last much longer than OLED and is not prone to Burn-In. So in a nutshell, MicroLED offers the same advantages as OLED without the drawbacks. MicroLED can also be made brighter with less power consumption than OLED at the same light level.

Samsung has also demonstrated a 146-inch TV called “The Wall” made with MicroLED at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2018. The TV does not have a border-line so it is possible to add another TV on the left/top/bottom/right side of the TV later. to increase the size or even replace only the damaged center with a new panel without replacing the whole with a new one. This can be done because MicroLED is more versatile to be made in small or large sizes and can be modular.

How Did MicroLED Get Into Commercial?

It’s quite difficult to make a MicroLED because this type of screen needs to be made per 1 sub-pixel. Just imagine the time it takes to make a 4K resolution TV with 25 million sub-pixels. So, it’s likely that we won’t see the development of MicroLED on the market on all of our devices in the near future, seeing that the manufacturing time is very long for just one device.

But with the patents owned by LG, Samsung, and Apple for “MicroLED” technology, the seriousness of the technology companies is very visible and the development of “MicroLED” will also be greatly helped by these experienced companies.
